WRITING WORKSHOP FOR AUTHORS IN BRAZIL AND LATIN AMERICA

We are organizing a workshop to provide guidance about writing papers for top international SIGCHI (CSCW, CHI, Ubicomp, etc) conferences with focus on the CSCW conference. The workshop will have two parts. In the morning, the mentors will present CSCW and related ACM conferences, the kinds of papers that can be submitted, strategies and tips for successful paper writing, and the general review process. In the afternoon, there will be small group writing sessions with a native English-speaking mentor from the CSCW community.


MENTORS

Mentors will be prominent members of the CSCW community, who have published many papers at the conference. Mentors will include:

  • Gary M. Olson, University of California, Irvine (chair);
  • David Redmiles, University of California, Irvine;
  • David McDonald, University of Washington;
  • Kori Inkpen Quinn, Microsoft Research;
  • David Randall, University of Siegen.

All mentors are experienced at helping non-native English-speaking authors fine-tune their papers for the CSCW audience. Each mentor will work with a group of participants on their submissions.


WORKSHOP FORMAT

The workshop will be organized in two parts. In the morning, the mentors will present the CSCW and other SIGCHI conferences, types of papers to be submitted, the reviewing process and other aspects for a successful submission. The afternoon session is reserved for people who are trying to prepare papers to submit to SIGCHI conferences. Participants will be divided in small groups that will focus on the types of papers (and submissions) they are more interested in (ethnographies, laboratory studies, design papers, tools and prototypes, and so on).


PARTICIPATION

The workshop will be limited to 100 participants due to space constraints. To participate in the workshop, people need to submit an abstract of a paper of the work they plan to submit to a conference or an abstract about their current research. Abstracts should include a description of the topic of the work, a description of what was done (e.g. building a tool, running a study), the methodology used, and a description of results so far. The last part of the abstract should include the title (Ph.D., Ph.D. Candidate, M.Sc. student, or Undergrad) of each author of the abstract so that participants can be selected. Participants will be selected according to the following order of preference:

  • Researchers and faculty, i.e., Ph.Ds.;
  • Ph.D students;
  • M.Sc. students; and
  • Others, including undergraduate students.
