25th BRAZILIAN SYMPOSIUM ON DATABASES
Promoted by the Brazilian Computer Society
Overview
SBBD is the official database event of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC). It has been the largest venue in Latin America for presentation and discussion of research results in the database domain. In its 25th edition, the symposium will be held in the city of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais, on October 5-8, 2010. SBBD joins researchers, students and practitioners, from Brazil and abroad, for discussing problems related to the main topics in modern database technologies.
Traditionally, SBBD has gathered nearly 500 attendees. Past editions of SBBD have been organized in cooperation with ACM/SIGMOD and partially sponsored by the VLDB Endownment. Besides the technical sessions, the symposium also includes invited talks and tutorials given by distinguished speakers from the international research community. Additionally, SBBD comprises a Thesis Workshop, a Demos Session, a Poster Session and several workshops co-organized with other co-located events. This year, the co-located events will be WebMedia, SBSC, and IHC.
Symposium venue
Belo Horizonte (“beautiful horizon”) is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, and the third largest city in Brazil. Located in the Southeastern region, strategically positioned within Brazil and the Americas, the city is surrounded by the Serra do Curral Mountains, which serve as a natural backdrop, as well as a historical reference. In addition to its natural advantages, and the ease of access by air and by land, the capital of Minas Gerais stands out for its architectural treasures, its strong vocation for commerce and services, and its rich artistic and cultural offerings. Belo Horizonte has a population of almost 2.4 million and over 5.3 million in its official metropolitan region.
Submissions instructions
Submitted papers will be judged by their appropriateness for the track in which they are being evaluated. Thus, appropriate placement of papers is important. The program committee chair may contact the authors and suggest to move their paper to another track in order to ensure a fairer evaluation.
Full papers
Full papers will be presented in the oral sessions of SBBD 2010 technical program. The papers should present interesting recent results or novel thought-provoking ideas in all areas of databases and its applications. Full papers submitted to all tracks must be written in English and must not exceed 16 pages.
One major modification in the SBBD 2010 submission process is its integration with JIDM – Journal of Information and Data Management, the new journal launched by SBC, as detailed next.
All accepted Full papers will be published in the October 2010 issue of JIDM and the SBBD review process will be integrated with that journal review procedure, as follows. Papers will be registered and submitted as usual, by May 05, 2010 and May 17, 2010, respectively. The submissions will then go through a first round of revisions and the authors will receive their reviews by June 11, 2010. These reviews may request the submission to be revised and the revised version must be submitted by July 9, 2010 for another review round. The reviews and acceptances for the revised version will be sent to authors by August 13, 2010.
Papers that are accepted by August 13, 2010 will be published in the October 2010 JIDM edition and presented at SBBD 2010. Papers that are accepted after that date should be published in the February 2011 JIDM edition and presented at SBBD 2011.

Overview
SBBD is the oficial Database event of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) and the most important Latin America event in this area. It is dedicated to the presentation of research results in the Database area, being a relevant forum to acquire as well as to share knowledge and experiences. The symposium brings together researchers, students and professionals from Brazil and other countries to discuss challenges related to real research topics in Databases. The venue for SBBD 2010 is the city of Belo Horizonte, capital of the Minas Gerais State, and the third largest city in Brazil. The selection and evaluation of the demos will happen in two phases. In the first phase, authors should submit a paper describing the main features of the demo. Each submitted paper will be reviewed by at least 3 TPC members with respect to originality, practical aspects, technical contribution and presentation. The second evaluation will happen at the symposium during the presentation of the demos when they will be assessed by a committee which will select the best demo.

Additionally, each demo must have an associated poster to be exhibited during the software demonstration. The poster dimensions must be 0.70 cm x 1.00 m (width x height), and must include the following information:
- software name;
- SBBD 2010 logo;
- author names and affiliations;
- information about eventual grants received to develop the software;
- contact e-mail and optional URL with more information about the software;

Tutorials
SBBD 2010 invites submissions of tutorial proposals. Each tutorial will be presented in a 3 hours session. Only an abstract (1-2 pages) of the accepted tutorials, including bibliographic references will be published in the symposium proceedings. However, copies of the presentation slides will be also required before the event for distribution to the tutorial attendees.
We will consider proposals for introductory and advanced tutorials on any topic within the area of databases. Introductory tutorials should target an audience consisting of advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as attendees from industry. Hence, they can be thought of as “recycling” courses though they should not be about traditional “textbook” topics. Advanced tutorials, on the other hand, must cover a topic’s state-of-the-art, motivating and exposing potential research issues.
Instructions for Authors
Proposals must be submitted electronically by May 31, 2009 (23:55 GMT -3) at https://submissoes.sbc.org.br/. Proposals must be no more than 5 pages, using an 11 pt or larger font, and must include the following items (in this order):
- Tutorial title, authors’ name, affiliations, e-mails and URL of the respective home pages (if available).
- The intended audience and its assumed background
- The language the tutorial will be presented (English or Portuguese)
- An abstract (no more the 100 words) stating the tutorial’s main goal.
- Outline of the tutorial (list of topics and brief description of how these are to be covered).
- Tutorial length (3 hours)
- List of (up to 10) related references.
- If the proposed tutorial has been given previously, where this tutorial has been presented before and how it will be modified for SBBD 2010.
- A brief bio of authors (up to 20 lines/author).
- The name of whom will present the tutorial, in case of a tutorial proposed by more than one author
- Audio-visual equipment required (e.g. overhead or multimedia projector)
Important
Subject to funding availability, SBBD may provide a travel allowance for one tutorial presenter. If such funding is required by the presenter, make sure it is clear in the proposal. The presenting author will be required to register him/herself for the symposium. SBBD reserves the right to refuse all of the submitted tutorial proposals, as well as to include invited tutorial presentations.
Submission Guidelines
Submitted proposals can be written in Portuguese or English. Submission in English is strongly encouraged. since the papers will be included in the ACM SIGMOD DiSC (http://www.acm.org/sigmod/disclist). Authors of all workshops must formally allow their workshop abstracts to be published with SIGMOD’s DiSC, otherwise the workshops will not be presented. Submitted proposals will be reviewed based on originality, relevance, technical soundness and clarity of presentation.
Before submitting a workshop proposal, and no later than May 23, 2010, authors must register its title, list of authors, track and abstract through the submission Web page at https://submissoes.sbc.org.br/. Papers must be submitted by May 31, 2010 using the same submission site. Authors should choose for the track “workshops” at the registration phase. Workshops proposals must be submitted in PDF format. Formats other than PDF will not be accepted.
